Today I spoke with Pierpaolo Barbieri, founder and CEO of Ualá, one of the largest digital banks in Latin America. He founded Ualá in 2017, driven by his personal experience during the 2001 Argentine crisis. Pierpaolo studied History and Economics at Harvard, has raised more than $850M from international funds, and led the purchase of a bank in Mexico to expand across the region.

1:25 - The Origin of Ualá and the Vision of Inclusion

Pierpaolo explains how his motivation comes from a historical and structural need in Latin America: the lack of social mobility.

  • What led him to leave his career in macroeconomics to build a digital bank?
  • How does his training in History connect with his business vision?

10:20 - The Mission as an Immovable North Star

Ualá’s mission (bringing financial services into the 21st century) has been a compass that does not change, even in the hardest moments.

  • Why does repeating the mission help hold the team together in moments of crisis?
  • How does strategy evolve without losing sight of the purpose?

18:50 - Building the Team and Culture

Pierpaolo emphasizes that a large part of Ualá’s success comes from attracting talent better than himself and fostering a culture of leadership.

  • How does he identify leaders who can attract other leaders?
  • Why does he consider Ualá one of the most “American” companies in its structure?

27:00 - Raising Capital and Speaking the Investor’s Language

Pierpaolo has raised more than $850M from funds such as Soros, SoftBank, and Tencent. He explains that knowing how to speak the investor’s language is key.

  • How does he adapt his pitch for international funds?
  • What common mistakes do founders make when negotiating an investment?

38:45 - Mexico as a Strategic Priority

Ualá bought ABC Capital to operate as a bank in Mexico. Pierpaolo details the challenges of scaling in a country with high informality.

  • Why was having a banking license key to operating?
  • What technological and cultural barriers do they face in Mexico?

47:20 - Direct Communication and Visible Leadership

Pierpaolo believes in leading with closeness: his personal email is on every Ualá card.

  • How does the CEO’s visibility affect the relationship with users?
  • Why is a flat structure key for a modern financial product?

55:10 - Public Speaking, Debate, and Building Ideas

Pierpaolo was part of Argentina’s debate team. Public speaking, he says, is essential for every founder.

  • How did he train his communication skill?
  • What role does storytelling play in leadership and investing?
